Methodology
How mtf.trading is built
Every chart on this site is back-traceable to an official NSE or BSE disclosure file. This page lists each source, what it contributes, and how the numbers are joined.
Not investment advice. Nothing on this site is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security. Every figure, chart, ranking and projection is public NSE/BSE disclosure data compiled for information and education only. Do your own research and consult a SEBI-registered adviser before investing.
Data sources
MTF book
NSE CM · Margin Trading Disclosure daily Excel + BSE Margin Trading daily Excel (MarginTrading_*.xls / .csv). One row per stock per day with the outstanding amount financed (total value of shares held under MTF), fresh exposure, and exposure liquidated. Available since 22 June 2017.
Stock universe
NSE EQUITY_L.csv + BSE List of Scrips (ListofScripData). Resolves every symbol/scrip-code seen in the MTF files to a canonical name and ISIN.
F&O membership
NSE F&O bhavcopy (BhavCopy_NSE_FO_*). Point-in-time per day · an F&O stock added or removed mid-week shows the right membership for each historical bar.
ETF list
NSE eq_etfseclist.csv. Used to bucket the per-day MTF book into F&O / non-F&O / ETF.
ISIN / EOD close
NSE & BSE cash bhavcopy (BhavCopy_*_CM_*, EQ_ISINCODE_*). Provides the daily EOD close shown alongside per-stock MTF charts and the ISIN used to canonicalise stock identity. The close line is corporate-action adjusted · older prices are back-adjusted for splits & bonuses (exact ratios from NSE’s corporate-actions feed) so the line stays continuous through them (scaled to today’s terms); a big move that is NOT a corporate action is left as-is.
Market cap
NSE PR price report (PR<ddmmyy>.zip → mcap*.csv) + BSE List of Scrips. Used for leverage % (book / mcap) and the % of universe view in the screener.
Company logos
Self-hosted SVGs vendored from the indian-listed-company-logos repo, keyed by ISIN. Stocks without a vendored logo fall back to a coloured initials monogram.
Source archival & provenance. NSE and BSE purge old reports
from their own sites over time, so every external source file this site depends on
· the daily MTF reports, bhavcopies, index/ETF lists, and the broker/rating
documents · is continuously mirrored to the Internet Archive.
Broker figures carry a \u{1F5C4} link to the archived copy of their primary
source, so each number stays independently verifiable even if the original is taken down.
MTF lets you buy shares by paying only part of the price · your broker funds the rest and holds the shares as collateral. It is India’s regulated way to buy equities on leverage. This page explains how it works, the SEBI rules around it, the risks, and how to read the numbers on this site.
What is MTF?
Under SEBI’s Margin Trading Facility, a stockbroker lends you money to buy approved shares in the cash (delivery) segment. You put up an initial margin (in cash or pledged securities); the broker funds the balance and charges daily interest on it. The shares you buy are pledged to the broker as security until you repay. It is the cash-market cousin of a loan-against-shares · distinct from F&O, where leverage comes from futures/options margins, not a funded delivery position.
How it works
MTF book (amount financed)
What this site calls the MTF book is the exchange-reported amount financed · the total value of the shares held under the facility, i.e. your own margin and the broker’s funding combined, not just the broker’s loan. In the NSE/BSE daily files this works out to roughly the shares’ market value (amount financed ÷ shares ≈ the traded price): about ₹100 of funded stock, of which you might post ₹25 and the broker funds ₹75. The broker’s actual credit is therefore a fraction of the book. It rises when clients open fresh positions and falls when they repay or are squared off.
Pledge
Since 2020, MTF-funded shares must be pledged in your own demat account through the depository’s margin-pledge system (CDSL/NSDL) · the broker cannot move them to its own account. A haircut is applied to the pledged collateral’s value.
Daily interest
Interest accrues every day on the amount you’ve borrowed (the broker’s funding portion, not your own margin), typically in the ~9–24% p.a. range depending on the broker. This is the running cost of carrying a leveraged position · you can model it on the calculators.
Mark-to-market
Your position is marked to market daily. If prices fall and your margin drops below the required level, the broker issues a margin call; if you don’t top up, the position is squared off.
SEBI’s MTF framework
Eligible securities
Only shares the exchanges approve for MTF (broadly, more liquid “Group 1” stocks · those with derivatives or that meet liquidity/impact-cost criteria). The approved list is published and revised periodically by NSE and BSE.
Initial margin
You must fund a minimum initial margin per stock, set from the security’s risk (VaR + Extreme-Loss Margin), so more volatile stocks need more of your own money. The rest is what the broker funds.
Square-off & aging
If a margin shortfall isn’t met, the broker squares the position off. There are also limits on how long a funded position can be carried before it must be converted to delivery (fully paid) or closed.
Disclosure
NSE and BSE publish a daily MTF disclosure · per stock, the outstanding funded book, fresh exposure and exposure liquidated. That daily file is the backbone of this entire site (see the methodology).
SEBI’s hard limits
Beyond the qualitative rules above, SEBI sets three hard numeric caps on how much a broker can lend under MTF, each measured against the broker’s own net worth. They are what stop the facility from over-gearing any single broker. All three come from SEBI’s Comprehensive Review of Margin Trading Facility (2017).
Overall broker cap (maximum allowable exposure)
A broker’s total MTF exposure “shall not, in any case, exceed the borrowed funds and 50% of his net worth.” The book it can fund is limited to everything it has borrowed for MTF plus half of its own net worth.
Borrowing cap (total indebtedness)
The borrowed half carries its own ceiling: “the total indebtedness of a stock broker for the purpose of margin trading shall not exceed 5 times of its net worth.” A broker cannot borrow more than 5× net worth to fund the book.
Per-client cap (concentration)
“Exposure to any single client at any point of time shall not exceed 10% of the broker’s maximum allowable exposure.” No one client can take up more than a tenth of a broker’s total MTF capacity.
Stack the first two together and the outer limit is simple: 5× net worth borrowed + 0.5× net worth of own funds ≈ 5.5× net worth of funded book at most. That 5.5× line is exactly what the brokers table’s “book ÷ net worth” column grades each broker against.
Two further official conditions sit alongside the caps. Funding source: a broker may only use its own funds or borrow from scheduled commercial banks and RBI-regulated NBFCs · no other source is permitted. Diversification: there is no fixed per-stock number, but SEBI requires the funded stocks and the pledged collateral to stay “well diversified” under a board-approved policy.
The risks
MTF magnifies both gains and losses. A leveraged position that moves against you loses value faster than the cash you put in, and three things can compound the damage:
Margin calls & forced liquidation
A sharp drop can trigger a margin call; if unmet, the broker sells your shares · often at the worst possible time, and sometimes across many clients at once, adding to the fall.
Interest drag
You pay interest every day the position is open, whether the stock rises, falls, or goes nowhere. A flat stock held on margin still loses you money.
Concentration
When a large share of a single stock’s free float is funded on margin, an unwind can be hard to exit without moving the price · this site’s most-leveraged and crowding views track exactly that.
How to read this site
MTF book
The total value of shares held under MTF (the exchange’s amount financed) · client margin + broker funding combined, not just the loan · in ₹. “Combined” = NSE + BSE summed. This is the headline number.
Fresh / liquidated / net flow
New margin positions opened vs closed on a day (NSE + BSE). Net flow can differ from the day-on-day book change · see the note on the daily pages.
% of free float
MTF book as a share of a stock’s freely-tradable market cap · how much of the tradeable float is margin-funded. Free float uses NSE’s investable-weight-factor basis.
Days to cover
MTF shares ÷ average daily volume · roughly how many days of normal trading it would take to unwind the book. Higher = more crowded.
Brokers
Per-broker MTF books, curated from credit-rating reports, annual reports and disclosures. See the brokers tab.
Every figure is downloadable on the data page and back-traceable on the methodology page.
FAQ
Is MTF the same as F&O leverage?
No. MTF is a funded delivery position in the cash market (you own the shares, pledged to the broker). F&O leverage comes from futures/options margins · no delivery, and different rules.
What happens on a margin shortfall?
The broker issues a margin call. If you don’t add funds/collateral in time, it squares off (sells) enough of the pledged shares to restore the margin.
Why do NSE and BSE numbers differ?
They are two separate exchanges with different broker mixes and eligible-security lists. A dual-listed stock’s combined book is the sum of both. NSE dominates the MTF book.
What is “free-float leverage”?
A stock’s MTF book divided by its free-float market cap · the share of its publicly-tradable value that is currently funded on margin. See /leveraged.
Does MTF cost anything if the stock doesn’t move?
Yes · daily interest accrues on the funded amount regardless of the stock’s direction. Leverage is not free.
Where does this data come from?
Directly from the daily MTF disclosure files NSE and BSE publish, plus official market-cap, ISIN and shareholding sources. No third-party estimates. Full lineage on the methodology page.
Can I use these numbers?
Yes, freely including commercially · please attribute “via mtf.trading, from NSE/BSE disclosures” and link back where you can. CSV/JSON on the data page.
